March 28, 2009 – Three Flags Ceremony, Frontier Park, St. Charles, MO
The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles (DESC), The Lewis and Clark Fife and Drum Corps, and several other reenactment groups will be supporting the “Three Flags Ceremony” and other activities being held at Frontier Park on Saturday, March 28, 2009.
Frontier Park is located on the banks of the Missouri River; in the heart of the historic district of St. Charles, MO. This is the opening ceremony for the kick off of the 200 day Bicentennial celebration of the 1809 incorporation of the City of St. Charles.
The unique flag-raising ceremony will mark the transition of the Louisiana Territory in 1804 from Spain to France to America. Town criers will begin walking the streets of St. Charles at 10:00 AM to rally people for the beginning of the ceremony at 11:00 AM. More than 20 DESC members in 1804 United States Army uniforms will be in military formation to demonstrate the dignity given to our flag over 200 years ago.
Following the “Three Flags Ceremony”, the DESC members will be positioned at several education stations in an authentic military encampment to explain the unique skills of the men of the original Lewis and Clark Expedition. They will also share their personal stories experienced during the four year reenactment of the entire Lewis and Clark Expedition in 2003 to 2006 to support the Bicentennial Commemoration of the original expedition. Other reenactors will provide cannon and musket demonstrations and many other early American skills.
The park will remain open until 4:00 PM to give visitors ample time to enjoy the events of the day.
